UK Black Pride (http://www.ukblackpride.org.uk/), Justice for Gay Africans (http://www.jfga.org.uk/) and other organisations agreed to work with her on her campaign for justice.
All Out has just posted the following: We just received the below message from Jean-Claude and 6 other Cameroonians - imprisoned just for being gay. They are silenced in their own country - but you can help them reclaim their voice. Stand with Jean Claude now: http://allout.org/cameroon

January 3, 2011
Although you've accompanied us with a lot of sadness, you've especially shown us a lot of kindness, love and determination throughout this year. We exhort you to never give up in to the discouragement and to never weaken in your mobilization for us and for the LGBT cause.
Because your support represents for LGBT in Cameroon in general and specially for us who are in prison - the HOPE. The HOPE to be one day, released from the PRISON in which we've been thrown, but also the HOPE that one day, LGBT people can walk quite freely in Cameroon, without any humiliation.
We wish you, from the bottom of our heart, to be of happy, healthy and that the coming year be full of promises and success.

Happy New Year from Cameroon,
Jean Claude Roger MBEDE (With Barrister Alice N'Kom on the picture),
Singha Jonas, Ndome Ndome Frankie, Ombwa Joseph Magloire, Tiomela
Lontsie Emma, Ntamack Nicolas, and Ntsama Séraphin.
Please take some time out to sign the petition, email others, share it on Facebook and tweet it: http://allout.org/cameroon

Kind Regards,
Phyll

New support for LGBT people at work on International Day Against Homophobia

The TUC has published new guidance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people at work to coincide with International Day Against Homophobia today (Tuesday).

The report – LGBT Equality at Work – covers changes in the law for LGBT people, workplace issues and training, recognising diversity, bullying and harassment, and the public sector equality duty.
It also includes guidance on challenging prejudice and discrimination, and promoting equality at work.
International Day Against Homophobia is held on 17 May each year, and the TUC is urging union members and the general public to use this day to remember LGBT people who have been killed around the world simply because of their sexuality.
Homosexuality is still illegal in 77 countries around the world, and in seven countries women, men and children are punished for their sexuality with death sentences.
In January in Uganda David Kato, a gay rights campaigner who sued a local newspaper which outed him as homosexual, was been beaten to death. The Ugandan parliament recently attempted to re-introduce an anti-homosexuality bill that could sentence LGBT Ugandans to death for “aggravated homosexuality”. There has been mass international lobbying against the bill – which has now been dropped – and the UK government has told the Uganda government of its outrage.
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: “While unions have successfully campaigned for equal rights for LGBT people in the UK, around the world the situation is sadly very different.
“In many countries LGBT people face harassment, intimidation, violence, ostracism, hate crimes – and even death, just because of their sexuality.
“International Day Against Homophobia is an opportunity for unions to highlight the suffering of LGBT people all around the world, and demand that the way they are treated is improved – both in the workplace and in the wider community.”
To mark International Day Against Homophobia, the Cutting Edge Consortium is running a seminar this evening (Tuesday) at the TUC’s headquarters in London on how the government’s free schools and academies programme could threaten LGBT equality.

The new publication LGBT Equality at Work is available at: www.tuc.org.uk/equality/tuc-19413-f0.cfm

Only Hours to stop Uganda's Gay Death Penalty

In a few hours, the Ugandan Parliament may vote on a brutal new law that carries the death penalty for homosexuality. Thousands of Ugandans could face execution -- just for being gay.
We've helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill's progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching. If we block the vote for two more days until Parliament closes, the bill will expire forever.
We have no time to lose. I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King's dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.” (Reuters, 31 March 1998)
February is Black History Month in the USA, celebrated since 1926. It is also LGBT History Month in the UK, celebrated since 2005. This month of two histories is an opportunity to draw lessons from the contributions Black and LGBT people have made to the cultural developments of our nations.
Sadly, like many mainstream narratives, the lives and experiences of Black LGBT people are often depicted through the lens of racism. An under-explored aspect of Black history is the presence of lesbian and gay people.
For example, George Washington Carver has a story right out of the history books. Born into slavery, he went on to graduate from high school, earn a master’s degree, and invent peanut butter. Most history books omit to mention that Carver was also Black and gay.
Dr. King’s compatriot, Bayard Rustin, organised the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It is with some irony that while Dr. King’s dream is coming true, almost 50 years later the theme of this year’s Black History Month in the US is ‘The History of Black Economic Empowerment’. While political emancipation may be close to achievement, the shackles of economic injustice and inequality remain firmly upon us, as Black people struggle against workplace prejudice. Before the 1963 march, Rustin championed the Freedom Rides, in which Black and white anti-racists took buses into the South to challenge the US Supreme Court decision to segregate public transport. Rustin also happened to be gay. In his later years, he spoke openly about LGBT rights and when died in 1987, the dream of sexual orientation equality was not fulfilled, but inching closer.
In 2003, aged 15, Sakia Gunn was murdered in New Jersey, USA, after rejecting sexual advances and telling the perpetrator that she and her friend were lesbians. Sakia was a young woman who chose to dress in ‘male’ attire. While more than 2,500 people attended her funeral, the broader public reaction to this hate crime did not compare with the outcry and actions following the tragic murder in 1998 of Matthew Shepard in rural Wyoming because of his sexual orientation. It is conceivable that race — Matthew was white and Sakia was Black — was the difference in the public’s response to these two shocking hate crimes.
Alvin Ailey; James Baldwin; Alexander Goodrum; June Jordan; Audre Lorde; Virginia Loving and Bessie Smith, are just a few of the Black LGBT people who have contributed writing, music and civil rights gains that were once only dreams. By confronting discrimination on two fronts — race and sexual orientation — these icons faced daunting, sometimes fatal, challenges in their paths toward freedom and acceptance.
When we fail to recognise everyone in our community, be they Black, disabled, lesbian or gay, or all of these, we surrender the narrative to someone else. We cannot transform or overcome hate and discrimination when we force individuals and entire communities to pick one identity and cast the rest aside.
Therefore, in honour of Black and LGBT History Month February 2011, the challenge to each of us is to consider our whole community, whomever that includes, to discover who has been overlooked or forgotten, and take action to remember and talk about them.
As Black and LGBT people we face big challenges in society today. It is vital that we recall how our forebears overcame theirs, when there were no models. They had to break new paths, so must we.

"Life in Trans: To develop best practice for Transgender issues in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire"

The LGBT Network Staffordshire is a local charity based in Hanley, giving support and advice to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans people around Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire .

LGBT Network Staffordshire is organising a conference, "Life in Trans: To develop best practice for Transgender issues in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire" on the 4th of February 2011 at The North Staffordshire Conference Centre in Hartshill Stoke-on-Trent.
The aim of the is conference to highlight and address many of the issues Trans people face in day to day life. This includes Hate Crime ranging from being called names in the street to, in its most extreme form, Trans people being killed just for being themselves. Employment for many people in today's climate is hard, but for many trans people the extra pitfalls and problems being faced can make finding a job an impossible task.
One of the greatest and hardest tests for Trans people is navigating the long and difficult transition pathway which, from the first GP's visit, can take 6-7 years. This is a difficult experience for every Trans person as they undertake real life experience, find their body changing through hormone treatments and surgery. This process is often being exasperated by a pathway which is very difficult to access, GP's who do not understand the issues, and long waiting times. These problems and many others can lead to crippling depression which makes all of these issues even more difficult.
The conference will address all of these issues and offer best practice from leading specialists from around the country. Key Note speakers Bernard & Terry Reed OBE from GIRES (Gender Identity Research and Education Society) will be delivering a talk on based on in-depth research on best practice for PCT's in the transition process and the sustained rapid growth in Trans people seeking medical care. They will be joined by a representative from the Police who will be discussing Transphobic Hate Crime and our role in combating it and Carol Robson who will be talking about the best practice in employing Trans people for organisations.
For this unique event we are asking for the small donation of £20 per delegate to attend. However as we hope many members of the Trans community can attend delegates from this community can join us for free. With the recent additions the Equality Act 2010 has made to the law and the additional roles and responsibilities on service providers, employers and businesses, this conference is not to be missed.
For more information or to book one of the limited spaces please call 01782 266998 or email info@gaystoke.com

Barriers and opportunities faced by LGB&T people in public and political life.

On 20 December 2010, Government commissioned research into the opportunities and barriers faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) people in public and political participation was published. The research was conducted by the Office for Public Management and forms part of the Government’s work programme ‘Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality’, which was launched in June 2010. The research and the wider work programme contribute to one of GEO’s key aims - to promote equal participation in civil society. By using the talents of everyone, we can make sure that our communities and institutions benefit from the whole range of experiences and skills of society. This report and its recommendations will enable us to develop targeted actions to improve the opportunities for, and tackle the barriers faced by, LGB&T people who want to participate in public, political and community life.
Below is the link to a copy of the report - if you wan tto print this you need to know it is 95 pages long.http://www.equalities.gov.uk/pdf/Experiences%20of%20LGBT%20people_for%20publishing%20Dec%202010.pdf

World Aids Day Campaign Petition

Dear friends

Below is an online petition from the National AIDS Trust requesting that the UK government adopt a strategy to tackle HIV/AIDS when the current one runs out this year. With the recent election still being all too fresh in the mind there was much discussion about the expected assault on public services. Many visitors to the stall were also interested in the voting record of their out going MP on LGBT issues, the Stonewall list of voting records is particularly shaming for the new Equality Minister, Theresa May, who has a worse record than even the likes Rev Ian Paisley. There was also good support for the other unions that had stalls on the day. While Steven and Tiwonge freely confirmed their love for each other, there was was no credible evidence that they had committed any illegal homosexual acts," said London-based human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell who has been supporting and advocating for the men since their arrest and detention in December last year.
He was commenting on the trial result today of two men who were prosecuted in Malawi on charges of homosexuality, Steven Monjeza (26) and Tiwonge Chimbalanga (20).
"The law under which they were convicted is a discriminatory law that only applies to same-sex relations. It is unconstitutional. Article 20 of Malawi's constitution guarantees equality and non-discrimination. The law in Malawi is not supposed to discriminate," added Mr Tatchell.

"Malawi's anti-gay laws were not devised by Malawians. They were devised in London in the nineteenth century and imposed on the people of Malawi by the British colonisers and their army of occupation. Before the British came and conquered Malawi, there were no laws against homosexuality. These laws are a foreign imposition. They are not African laws.

"I expect both men will now appeal against the verdict and against any sentence that is handed down. Steven and Tiwonge's best hope is that a higher court will overturn this unjust, cruel verdict.
"With so much hatred and violence in the world, it is bizarre that any court would criminalise two people for loving each other.
"The magistrate was biased from outset. He refused the two men bail, which is very unusual in cases of non-violent offences. In Malawi, bail is normal. It is often granted to robbers and violent criminals. Denying Steven and Tiwonge bail was an act of vindictiveness.
"I appeal to governments worldwide, especially the South African government, to condemn this harsh, bigoted judgement and to urge its reversal," said Mr Tatchell.

Prior to the verdict, Tiwonge and Steven issued a defiant message from their prison cell. It affirmed their love for each other and thanked their supporters in Malawi and worldwide.
Tiwonge said: "I love Steven so much. If people or the world cannot give me the chance and freedom to continue living with him as my lover, then I am better off to die here in prison. Freedom without him is useless and meaningless."
"We have come a long way and even if our family relatives are not happy, I will not and never stop loving Tiwonge," said Steven.
The two men's messages were relayed from inside Chichiri Prison in Blantyre, Malawi, to Peter Tatchell of the LGBT human rights group OutRage! in London, England.

Tiwonge and Steven stressed their gratitude for the support they have received from fellow Malawians and from people around the world:
"We are thankful for the people who have rallied behind us during this difficult time. We are grateful to the people who visit and support us, which really makes us feel to be members of a human family; otherwise we would feel condemned," said Tiwonge. Steven added: "All the support is well appreciated. We are grateful to everybody who is doing this for us. May people please continue the commendable job...Prison life is very difficult."

Peter Tatchell expressed his admiration of the two men: "Steven and Tiwonge are showing immense fortitude and courage. They declared their love in a society where many people - not all - are very intolerant and homophobic. This was a very brave thing to do. Although suffering in prison, they are unbowed. They continue to maintain their love and affirm their human right to be treated with dignity and respect," said Mr Tatchell.
"They have taken a pioneering stand for the right to love. They love each other, have harmed no one and believe that love should not be a crime. It is nobody's business what they do in the privacy of their own home. There is no evidence that they have committed any crime under Malawian law. They should never have been put on trial. Even prior to their conviction, they had already spent nearly five months behind bars.
"OutRage! is supporting Steven and Tiwonge. For the last four months, we have arranged extra food to supplement the men's meagre, poor quality prison rations.
"We pay tribute to the other people and organisations who are giving legal and medical assistance to the detained men. This is a huge help. Steven and Tiwonge have asked me to communicate their appreciation," said Mr Tatchell.
Sixty-seven British MPs have signed a House of Commons Early Day Motion (EDM 564), which condemns the arrest and trial of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga. http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=40143&SESSION=903

Amnesty International has adopted Steven and Tiwonge as Prisoners of Conscience: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/actions_details.asp?ActionID=682

Until quite recently Steven and Tiwonge did not realise that they had been adopted as Prisoners of Conscience by Amnesty International. When this news was relayed to them in prison they were, to quote one source: "Very happy with the effort made by Amnesty International to accord them this status. They offer their thanks to Amnesty."

Tiwonge and Steven have also expressed appreciation for the protest on their behalf in London on 22 March.
See photos of the protest here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/outrage/sets/72157623672689772/
See videos of the protest here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Malawi+protest+london&aq=f

The two men thanked London-based African and British activists who have lobbied the Malawian Ambassador and the Commonwealth Secretary-General and Human Rights Unit to seek their release and to secure medical treatment for Steven. Steven's condition has stabilised but he remains very ill. He is thin and weak and has jaundiced eyes, according to an eye-witness who saw him last weekend.
Tiwonge and Steven are urging continued protests to "get our release and the dropping of charges by the Malawi government."
Write a letter to Steven and Tiwonge. We believe that the continuing exemptions in employment give a green light for further reactionary opposition to anti discrimination provisions on goods and services, and against progressive change on sex education for young people.

Against the Exemptions to the Employment Regulations
CEC has campaigned during the course of the Equality Bill against the prioritising of freedom of thought, conscience and religion over the human rights of LGBT people. We have issued regular briefing papers, held a public meeting in Parliament and lobbied MPs, Lords and Civil servants. We were very disappointed that the Government’s intending narrowing of the law on religious exemptions in employment was watered down and then defeated in the House of Lords.

It is clear that many LGBT people, including LGBT people of faith, who work for religious organisations, in faith schools, for charities with a ‘religious ethos’, and delivering public services in other parts of the third sector, will continue to live in fear of discrimination and prejudice at their workplace. CEC is dismayed that the Schools Standards and Framework Act has not been brought under the new law so as to give proper protection to teachers of all subjects in faith schools. It is also clear that many third sector organisations are openly flouting the law on equality as it currently exists.
For the Public Duty
The CEC welcomes the positive aspects of the Equality Bill, most notably the extension of the duty on public bodies to promote equality in sexual orientation. We will be campaigning to ensure that the regulations on this duty, which are due to be issued in coming months meet the aspirations of the many LGBT people who rely on public services.

Civil Partnerships in Religious Buildings
The CEC welcomes the passing of Lord Alli’s amendment to the Equality Bill that permits Civil Partnerships to take place in religious buildings. We congratulate the religious organisations who already support such ceremonies, namely the Unitarian Church, the Society of Friends and the Metropolitan Community Church and support the extension of this right in other religious denominations. We look forward to the promised consultation on the appropriate Regulations and future reform of the Marriage Law in the interests of equality.

For Compulsory Sex Education
The CEC regrets that the Governments provisions in the recent Children, Schools & Families Bill to bring in sex education as a compulsory part of the curriculum was removed in the negotiations with the Conservative Party at the final stages of the Parliamentary process. LGBT young people as well as their parents and families need accurate information on sex and sexuality if they are to begin to counter the homophobia and transphobia still prevalent in our society, and lead happy and healthy lives.

Future Battles
As the General Election draws nearer we must ensure that no concessions may be made to homophobia and transphobia in the guise of religious popularism. We regret the remarks of Chris Grayling, the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary that there is a case for religious exemptions to the provision of goods and services to LGBT people. We will be watching closely the Charity Commissions review of the case of Catholic Care Leeds that may allow religious fostering and adoption agencies to opt out of equality.

To contact the Cutting Edge Consortium you can email us on cuttingedgeconsortium1@googlemail.com

Welcome!

Welcome to the new blog for the Midlands TUC LGB & T Network.
